Kissimmee Lions Clubhouse

Special Olympics USA 2022

Special Olympics USA Games is an event held once every four years in the United States, offering athletes from across the nation to compete in summer sports, including many of the 32 Olympic-type sports.

Like Lions Club International, Special Olympics is recognized globally. Special Olympics is a sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the United States. It is part of the global Special Olympics movement. Special Olympics was founded in 1968 with the main goal to accept and welcome individuals as they are. Special Olympics provides year-round training in Olympic based sports and is based in 192 countries.

Lions Club International has partnered with the international Special Olympics for over 20 years. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and Special Olympics have established a special partnership to provide free vision screenings at Special Olympics sporting events worldwide. Since the partnership began, the Opening Eyes program has screened more than 300,000 athletes and provided prescription eye-wear to nearly 100,000 athletes.

The Kissimmee Lions Club is partnering with the Special Olympics of Florida in the Special Olympics USA 2022 Games that will be held in Orlando from June 5, 2022, to June 12, 2022. This will be the 1st time these Games will have been held in Orlando or Florida. The Kissimmee Lions Club is raising money to help with the uniform and gear for the Florida Special Olympics Athletes at the 2022 games in Orlando. These will be the biggest Special Olympics games ever. Florida will field 395 athletes (see box below). Hemisphere-wide, almost 5,000 athletes will compete in 19 sports.

Team Florida alone needs over 1,000 uniforms and gear for the June 2022 Special Olympics. The Lions of Florida, which comprises all of Florida and the Bahama, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao islands, is committed to supply these uniforms and gear.

If you would like to help, you can donate by credit card or check or cash through the Kissimmee Lions Club Foundation, (a 501c3 nonprofit corporation) and the Foundation will place your donation with the Special Olympics USA held in the Orlando area June 5-12. 2022.
